From Kigali to the World: Where Youth and Innovation Meet

My Experience at the Youth Connect Africa Summit 2024

Introduction

I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Youth Connect Africa Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda. This summit gathered young leaders, innovators, and change-makers from across the continent, creating a vibrant space for collaboration and inspiration. My journey was not merely a travel experience; it was a transformative adventure that deepened my understanding of the pivotal role youth play in shaping Africa's future.

Arrival in Kigali

Upon arriving in Kigali, I was welcomed by the stunning hills and the vibrant atmosphere of the city. The moment I stepped out of the airport, excitement surged through me as I anticipated the days ahead. After settling into my accommodation, I joined fellow participants for the summit's opening ceremony.

The ceremony was remarkable, featuring an inspiring address by President Paul Kagame. His emphasis on youth empowerment and innovation as driving forces for progress across Africa resonated deeply with me. Listening to his vision for the future, I felt invigorated and motivated. This summit was not just an event; it was a clarion call for all of us to take action in advancing our communities and countries.

Summit Activities

The summit officially kicked off with a packed agenda of workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. Each session aimed to engage young minds and inspire actionable ideas. I actively participated in discussions focused on entrepreneurship, technology, and sustainable development. The energy in the room was palpable as young leaders shared their visions and initiatives.

One standout session for me was a workshop on leveraging technology for social change. Experts shared insights into innovative projects making a difference in sectors such as agriculture and education. Hearing how technology can address pressing challenges in our communities was inspiring. I also had the opportunity to network with fellow participants, exchanging ideas and forming connections that I believe will extend well beyond the summit.

Cultural Immersion and Exploration

After the summit sessions, we set out to explore Rwanda’s rich culture and breathtaking beauty. Our first stop was Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes. The serene views and tranquil atmosphere provided an ideal backdrop for reflection and connection with fellow attendees. We enjoyed a leisurely afternoon, sharing stories and discussing our experiences.

Next, we visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a profound and emotional experience. The memorial serves as a powerful reminder of Rwanda's tragic past and its remarkable journey toward reconciliation and healing. Walking through the exhibits deepened my understanding of the resilience of the Rwandan people and reinforced the importance of hope and unity.

Later, we explored City Park, a vibrant space that showcases local art and community life. The park buzzed with energy, laughter, and creativity, highlighting how the community comes together to celebrate its culture and heritage.

Academic Insights and Conclusion

Our exploration continued with a visit to Kigali University, where we engaged with students and faculty about their innovative programs and research initiatives. The university's commitment to fostering young talent was evident in the projects we learned about. It was inspiring to see students actively involved in research that tackles both local and global challenges.

As my journey in Rwanda came to a close, I felt a profound sense of empowerment and connection. The experiences I had—from inspiring speeches to cultural exploration—reinforced my belief in the potential of youth to drive meaningful change.

I would like to extend special thanks to my mentor, Yasir Mohamed Ahmed Baffo, for his warm welcome and invaluable support throughout this journey, and to Dr. Shuaib Abdalla Hassan, Executive Director of Somali Youth Vision, for giving me the chance to travel and participate in this important event. Your guidance has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. A heartfelt shoutout to Bravo Baffo Ltd for their support as well.

The connections I made and the knowledge I gained during the summit will undoubtedly influence my future endeavors. Rwanda’s spirit of innovation and resilience will continue to inspire me as I strive to make a positive impact in my community. This summit was not just a fleeting moment; it was a pivotal step in my journey as a young leader committed to creating change.
